As we move into the second half of the season I can say that despite any record breaking snowfall it has indeed been an above average season. A cold and blustery day this past Sunday dropped around 8 inches from early morning through the evening and this will help to keep the ball rolling into next month! With the wind driving the snow as it fell I had my familly bundled up and we were at it all day long. My 9 year old and 6 year old were enjoying knee deep shots all afternoon and looked like to little snow balls as they departed the lift for another blast down the hill! After so many days of “hero” snow and perfect grip it and rip it groomers it was nice to step out of the comfort zone and enjoy the snow as the wind whiped up new drifts and “powder” stashes with each new run. Back to groovelicious snow today, but I hope we see another storm soon and welcome the return of skiing in the snow again and not on top of it, a different skill set to be sure, but fun all the same. We did hear at least one complaint about the snow not being groomed through the day, please understand that KB does its very best not to put a groomer out on the hill during hours of operation and that the heaviest snow fell in the morning hours through afternoon. Fresh snow is paradise for some and a nightmare for others especially as the prevailing wind blows from the west and drives the blowing snow into your face as you depart the lift. In short, it snowed a bunch and that may at times require extra effort to get the most out of the day, we like snow here in the Glenwood Valley and hope to see lots of more of it! Powder skiing is a rare bird in WNY, I hope many of you were able to get out and enjoy it and plan to enjoy the many days of skiing and riding ahead! To the party who experienced some difficulty in the deep stuff yesterday please know that your concerns were handed to Man.

Cut out the office at 5pm yesterday and out on the slpes for an hour and a half. Great skiing. As a racer I kinda like my snow to kick back a bit, but even I appreciate the fluff we have been getting all week! It looks like we are stuck in thsi cold snowy groove for anothe week or more! I took a tour over by the park proper and it looks like they are ready to move in with the heavy equipment and put that thing together, tons of snow in the park and some huge piles waiting to be turned into hits. Keep an eye on the website for updates and a park oppening announcement. I’ll report anything here when I get the word! Today the snow falls slowly and the skiing is just that much better than yesterday, and thats sayin’ something. See ya on the hill.

Hapopy new year folks. So far so good, real cold air rolling in today and this weekend, could that be enough for the snow guns to lay down the goods in the park so the boys can get to work building hits and planting rails, my bet is yes and that in a weeks time or less the Terrain park proper will be online. I also think that Moment, Mistletoe and 8s will pop open with just one more good round the clock snowmakiing session. This is not the word from Ops, but an observation from my own ramblin’ round the area, so take it for what its worth. Hope you all had a great night and got enough left in the tank to get after it today, ’cause the snow is awesome and more is falling as I type. Adios, see ou on the slopes!

In about 1/2 an hour I am told that Coal Chute and Twister will open and I just returned from a few rips down Twister where upon the top of the slope (Twist) I found some park features installed and some of the crew getting after it with rakes and shovels to smooth out the new man made snow. See the homepage (kbski.com) for pics of the features. Looks like a straight box and rail, two curved boxes and a big old metal tank to jump on! A few more features were off to the side awaiting placement in the early season park. Have fun… The snow on Twister was very kind by the way.

I see that the guns are off Twister and I think Coal Chute, meaning they will open very soon. Twister will be home to some terrain park features as soon as perhaps tomorrow (Tuesday, 12/22/09) ! Looking ahead I think that on the 26th we could see Coal Chute, Twister, Holly, Candy Cane, Snoopy Slope, Slalom Run, Exhibition and perhaps Hemlock if all goes well. Then again, I though Twister would be open Saturday, so what do I know. I’ll be here in the morning and will take a gander at Twister to see if any features have been installed by the park crew. Things are coming together for a pretty nice Christmas break scene at KB with park riders getting after it on Twister and racers rippin’ around Slalom Run and lots of room leftover for the crowds! See you out there.

BTW… Nice to see most folks taking care this weekend, working well with each other to avoid the dangers of a crowded slope, good on ya! I think I only had to “get skinny” once to sneak through quickly closing space, but it was my fault entirely

Out early this am walking the slopes and now booted up ready to go to “work” and get a few few pics for an afternoon report. Hope you can make it out Today or this weekend. Remember, it is very grim to end your season or someone elses on opening weekend, with oly a few slopes we all need to watch out for each other out there and not anything stupid. Keep your head on a swivel and make it your job not to endanger the other guy! Soone enough more terrain will pop open and we can put the hammmer down! See ya out there and have fun!

The progress on Twister and CoalChute continues and it will be evaluated through the week, opening asap.

No rails etc. will in place Friday, no information on when a few rails etc. will be put in place.

So… A mixed bag, I had hoped for more terrain and perhaps a few boxes to keep the park crew happy, but taking the glass half full outlook I can say that Holly looks great, mid season conditions, perfectly groomed out this afternoon and setting up for opening day. A lt. snow should add just enough fluff to really reward the early birds tomorrow.

If any news breaks I will report to kbski.com first and update here when time allows. As is my tradition I hope to be here with the sun tomorrow and get a few early moorning pics of Holly and get ready to meet the first riders of the 2009-2010 season, carve a few arcs and then drop a first hand report on the conditions to the homepage.

See you out there, -acm
