NYS working to tax skiers and snowboarders, and other residents seeking a healthy lifestyle!

Posted Under Uncategorized -

You may have heard that NYS is working to tax the recreational services and other items (such as sugary drinks?) in an effort to put more cash into hands of the state and out of the hands of it’s residents at a time when we the people are saving are struggling to make ends meet and the lucky among us are working harder than ever to provide for our families. So, they will tax sugary sodas because they contribute to obesity and health care costs and then on the next line they propose taxing your health club dues and your ski pass, activities that promote a healthy lifestyle.  I know it is ludicrous to try to make any sense of the inner working of our legislature and it’s statesmen and women, but this is insulting. The following response was posted to this blog elsewhere and merits reprinting here. Also please go to kbski.com and check out the News at Cornell’s Corner for more details on how to combat this cash grab by the states elite.

Following from a concerned citizen and snow-sport enthusiast…

“Felt this was so important that I wrote to the Governor on the proposed ski tax. I urge you all to do the same.”

“Dear Governor Patterson,
I understand that the current economic conditions have had a profound effect on all and that money is tight for all, both individuals and governments. I however feel that taxing a recreational activity is a poor idea. In these times of difficulty, many ordinary, hard-working common people look to skiing and snowboarding and other recreational activities to get away and release themselves from all the bad that exists in day to day life. An increase in price due to higher taxes can be a deterrent to some and place a wonderful, enriching experience out of the reach financially of many.

Moreover, our society is at a point where obesity and weight problems are on the verge of an epidemic, yet the proposal calls for a tax on activities gets people out, being active and healthy? I feel such a course of action is foolish and short sighted.

As a person of limited income who has devoted his life to the sport of skiing and is currently enrolled in a Bachelors Degree program for Resort Management I am highly likely to be a victim of the effects of this tax.

Even further, as a skier, I don’t want to have this economic crisis following me to the last places I have where I can escape the everyday troubles of the world and release in a healthy manner; a snow covered run at one of New York’s great ski areas.”

Winter is here and things are looking good.

Posted Under Uncategorized -

The majority of the slopes are again open as the comeback from the last warm spell is complete! Snow-making is still on line and many of the guns are camped in the park as that nears completion. I hope to check out the efforts later today but a conversation with the park manager led me to believe that he was planning on begin building features as early as today. Once that area is done the guns will re deploy to bolster the main slopes and areas of specific need. The scene is decidedly wintry and it very cool to have some snow in Early January after a few season of dismal early winter weather. This weekend 245 has a Rail Jam Saturday and we are offering a 2 day race clinic. Student groups are kicking off today and things are rolling to be sure!  The Holiday season is behind us and the meat of the ski season is here! See you on the slopes.

Boarders at KB… a compliment

Posted Under Uncategorized -

Out yesterday evening from 4-7 and was enjoying the falling snow and some suspect cheesy tunes on my ipod and beyond that, I was enjoyed watching a few groups of boarders who displayed a here to fore uncommon smoothness while hunting out some natural kickers and terrain features on a powder filled evening. It appears we have some talent lurking on the hill sides of the Glenwood Valley! I see it in the park when open but think that seeing some of the regions best ride on a night when the natural terrain variations showcased their skills was much more entertaining. Good on ya!

As the world turns…

Posted Under Uncategorized -

Waiting for the Man to make a call? Same here!  I know that whatever sense of urgency I may be feeling is nothing compared to those of you who can’t just look out the window and see whats going on. So, here is whats goin’ on man…

We have endured a reversal of fortune on the Lake Effect Snow front seeing heavy snows fall all around us while the sun continues to shine high above the Glenwood Valley. Very frustrating indeed.

The good news is that the temperatures were colder than I expected and we saw long runs of continuous snowmaking over the past week. Also (here comes the eternal optimism silver lining glass is always half full line of bull) the lack of wet heavy natural snow early last week allowed the ground to freeze up some and should result in an excellent surface when we open thanks to the skill and experience of our snowmaking crew!

Whats going to open when we do get rolling… Looking at the slopes today I think Holly should pop open with excellent skiing and riding. Twister is coming along, but without another run of cold and some help from Ullr it will take a bit more time to get er’ done. The bunny hill should be open?

Park Features etc.  I am trying to track down S. Voit today to get a detailed plan on park progression. Keep posted. Operations is very dedicated to the park scene this year as evidence by the new park slope atop World of your own and expanded features etc. Look to the park page in the next week or so for the seasonal park plan.

So, that is all well and good, all I want to know is when will you open?!… The official word will be dropped Wednesday if all goes as planned. I suspect that we will open at 9am Friday morning with Holly and the beginner hill (Beginner hill needs some more snowmaking weather). This is a very early opening and crazy early taking note that we have seen more than 3 inches of natural snow.

I will continue to post updates as information becomes available.

Snowmaking to begin tonight!

Posted Under Uncategorized -

I know you are all curious as to whats happening with at KB today. Here is what I can tell you

1. About 2 inches fell here at KB

2. About a foot fell in Springville, we are just outside the Lake Snow band, looking for it to shift later today.

3. Holly is lined with snow cannons both sides, top to bottom, ready to fire this evening.

4. Temps look good for snow making at night all week and Ops is prepared to make snow at every opportunity.

What I can not tell you…

1. Opening day, way to far out with warm ground temps to jump to any conclusions.

2. I do not remember full snowmaking operations starting this early during the past 5 seasons.

I will get some pics up tomorrow of the first nights progress and keep the site updated daily as we build toward an opening and hourly when things are looking like go time!

Here is a pic as of 8:30 this morning, Monday Nov. 17th, 2008.

Mucho Jib Day Jam!?!

Posted Under Uncategorized -

Not to sure  about the event title Mucho what?, but last seasons, MJDJ was very cool indeed. A fall season Jam format with a ton of kids rolling around in the mud and some snow! I don’t know what the weather will bring, but be snow, rain or sun this kick off event should be a blast for participants and spectators alike. At 5pm the action moves indoors for a showing of Here And There, featuring local riders and others with some great KB, urban and out west footage. It happens on Nov. the 8th, sign up at 1pm, event start at 2pm. This is during the swap/open house so the Lodge will be open with food and beverage facilities as well as deals on new and used gear. Cost to register for the MJDJ is a paltry fee of 5 bucks.

Rambling Thoughts

Posted Under Uncategorized - Tags: ;

Got the keys to the blog so we can start to run with it and kill some time waiting for the snow to fall. I am off to the Toronto Ski Show later today and will be out of the office for the remainder of the week. Here are a few things of note that have come across my desk recently.

  • A-Basin to open Wednesday. I’ll take fresh tracks over falling leaves any day.
  • Fall Fest… great weather a good crowd, near perfect. The huge traffic issues were a problem for those not back road savvy and I hear rumour of multiple enforcement zones Saturday night on all roads leading out of town, hope everyone had a safe and fun weekend.  What did y’all think of the Red Bull Cola being handed out at the fest. As I was working at the KB tent all day I hit up the Red Bull girls for more than one can and it grew on me, good stuff, plus you know… Red Bull girls!
  • Newtrails… A few “historic trails” are in the process of being thinned out along the outer Northern edge of Kissing Bridge. I took a ride up the hill the other day and the new slopes appear to be a throw back to the classic New England, East Coast narrow tree lined meandering runs. I really look forward to winding my way along these reborn routes with my kids this winter!  In addition the narrow run (unnamed) that ran down just to the North of the park has been bulldozed and widened and I would guess that it will add a third more terrain to available park space without taking away from all purpose areas, although the new section would make a sweet GS trail, leading down into the pitch of World. Perhaps it can be set up as a boarder/skier cross slope, that would be sweet indeed! I have pics of booth of these area and will post them next week here and or on the news section of kbski.com
  • KB ticket/product sale… EMS Grand Opening, Tonawanda, October 25th. Details coming soon.

Keep On Keepin On,
