Cut out the office at 5pm yesterday and out on the slpes for an hour and a half. Great skiing. As a racer I kinda like my snow to kick back a bit, but even I appreciate the fluff we have been getting all week! It looks like we are stuck in thsi cold snowy groove for anothe week or more! I took a tour over by the park proper and it looks like they are ready to move in with the heavy equipment and put that thing together, tons of snow in the park and some huge piles waiting to be turned into hits. Keep an eye on the website for updates and a park oppening announcement. I’ll report anything here when I get the word! Today the snow falls slowly and the skiing is just that much better than yesterday, and thats sayin’ something. See ya on the hill.

  • Don’t know, could be moving machines to new locations and grooming out the whales left from the previous nights work, they were running last night when I left. Can’t see from my office window if they are on snow or not. Snowmaking is not done for the season yet, no worries.

  • You sure as heck are allowed to complain on this blog from time to time, but… last night it was pretty much raining, a fine misty rain that froze on contact or even before touchdown, but in the sky it was wet. This is a temp inversion, warmer air aloft and cold air down here where we live. If you blow snow into that mist you get more rain and make terrible wet slush that set ups like a rock and ruins the base wherver you laid it down. I ran a crew out west for years, I know this to be true and am not just honkin’ for the man. We are nearlly 100% open so I am not so sure about the 1/2 of the area open, and so long as I am at it, 3 feet of fine blower pow is awesome to ski in, but it packs down to about 2 inches under a groomer. All that said I wish the Park had seen more snowmaking earlier and often feel slopes could be open before they are ( I am old school and don’t mind a “look the heck out…natural snow conditions, thin areas and variable surface conditions may exist “sign atop a trail head), but that may be a matter for the lawyers to address. No worries mate, snow making will resume where needed when it can and the park is going online soon.

  • Not going to argue with you about snowmaking and Relative humidity, it is what it is. North…, 8 open of 12. So what is not open is essentially the terrain park (Devils Funnel/Right on) World of Your Own, Crazy 8s, Moment and Black Jack. Of those the Park, Moment and 8s may be open this weekend or sooner. If your a park rider you may have a beef, otherwise the conditions are great and I think Operations has done a fine job grooming the fresh and pushing out the man made since the rains on the day after Christmas. You disagree, thats your option and you are entitled toyour opinion of course. In any case, I too hope to see the guns firing again sooner than later and am looking forward to the Park and World opening so I can enjoy the short lift ride to some of the best terrain at the area!

  • Love that you have not groomed South! It is bumping up very nicely! Been going just about everyday since that disappointing Christmas Day rain and I thought that conditions were going to be awful for a long time. Amazing how good these conditions are. Great Job Park Team!!

  • ANON, i agree that south is getting better and better. With all of this pow it’s been crazy nice down there and with more snow in the forecast it’s going to get better and better.

  • Best guess would be Saturday along with the park, but thats just my gut feeling. I see they made snow at Freedom 35 and World last night, kinda sleeting out this evening, so snowmaking will be touch and go, but I saw two cats prowling around the park when I drove by at 4pm or so.

I love the World chair, short and quick and gets you to the goods!

Shhhh, don’t tell anyone, no lift lines either!

  • Not sure on World, Park manager is doing all he can to have it ready sometime tomorrow, but would not commit to that date, it is getting very close and I have seen them working in the park day and night.

  • I am starting to wonder if my season pass is for skiing or snowmobiling. I have been at KB for the last 16 days in a row and today I saw more snowmobile activity than ever. Has anyone stopped to think that perhaps the sleds should operate on a designated trail or at least stick to the sides?

I encountered two snowmobiles today running down the middle of Rooster at about 9:30 a.m. These guys are often wearing headphones (music) so with the noise of the machine and music going there is no way to communicate with them.

I have never encountered such random snowmobiling at a ski area. Someone needs to get this under control before someone gets hurt. There is something wrong when you have to be on constant alert for snowmobiles at a ski area.

  • I agree with Tom. I was there last monday morning when there was about about 4 inches of fresh snow on all the slopes. I saw within the first 2 lift rides at least 5 snowmobiles go straight up the middle middle of slalom run, taking separate paths, and tracking through all the fresh powder. How can skiers expect to enjoy the fresh snow when there are numerous ribbons of snowmobile tracks spanning the entire length of the hill. I am aware that there is a designated snowmobile path between crazy 8’s and slalom run, therefore why must they track up the ski hills before we even get a chance to ski them?

  • I’ve seen the snowmobiles go up the middle alot too, for example one guy tore up coal chute right onto the north shuttle, nearly killing me
